Este libro narra la historia de una mujer cuyo nacimiento se produjo el mismo día de la independencia dominicana. De ahí su nombre: Patria, convertida al término de su vida en una heroína. A Patria Mirabal le tocó vivir su niñez, adolescencia y adultez durante una de las más horrendas dictaduras de América Latina. Se formó escuchando informaciones sobre las permanentes atrocidades que cometía la tiranía; pero esos constantes excesos, menos que amilanarla, le fueron forjando una conciencia crítica desde muy temprana edad. Lo mismo ocurrió con Minerva y luego con María Teresa. Aun en el ambiente totalmente controlado por los partidarios del dictador a Patria no le pudieron tronchar ni su alegría particular ni sus acciones solidarias hacia los demás. Cuando se casó, su firmeza y su compromiso no mermaron, lo que implicó, junto al apoyo de su esposo, exponerlo todo, incluso sus propios hijos. El dictador no pasó por alto tanto decoro en aquel hogar y, dentro de los cientos de encarcelamientos indiscriminados que cometía a nivel nacional, incluyó al esposo de Patria y a su hijo mayor. Luego ordenó la aniquilación de las tres hermanas, ejecutada el 25 de noviembre de 1960. No conforme, la dictadura destruyó la casa y transfirió en pública subasta el patrimonio obtenido por Patria y su esposo Pedrito. Esas acciones solo lograron que en el seno del pueblo creciera más el valor que irradiaba esta mujer excepcional y sus hermanas. En 1999, en honor a Patria, a Minerva y a María Teresa Mirabal, la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) declaró el 25 de noviembre como el Día Internacional para la Eliminación de la Violencia contra las Mujeres. Ambientada en esa cadena de hechos, Mercedes Alonso Romero construyó la biografía titulada Su nombre es Patria.
