A pesar de mi zambullida en la literatura dominicana de los diez últimos años, tengo que admitir que pocas novelas llegaron a sacudirme de una manera tan integral y profunda como una de las primeras obras dominicanas que leí y que junto con muchos escritores y críticos sigo considerando una novela cumbre. Me refiero a Sólo cenizas hallarás (bolero) de Pedro Vergés. Lo interesante es que las tendencias que acabo de pergeñar y muchas más pistas (a veces todavía poco transitadas) ya se hallan (a veces en germen) en esta obra. Pedro Vergés (1945) trata el desengaño, el vacío y la desorientación después del trujillato, indaga en la oposición campo-ciudad,incluye la diáspora en constante diálogo con lo dominicano, evoca a los subalternos mediante el tíguere, el teniente Sotero, y la empleada Lucila en su constante mimicry, integra el problema del patriarcado y exalta la fuerza de la mujer, hace uso de la ironía y del humor que hacen más llevaderas y nada dogmáticas ciertas ideas, comenta el desarraigo profundo, introduce el lenguaje dominicano y la cultura popular de una manera a veces muy sutil.
