As topical today as when it was first published in 1938, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins is the story of a young boy (the same one featured in the Caldecott Honor Award-winner Bartholomew and the Oobleck) and his unjust treatment at the hands of a king. Después de leer la noticia de un accidente aéreo en el Himalaya, Tintín tiene un sueño donde su joven amigo Tchang herido le pide ayuda medio enterrado en la nieve. Al día siguiente se entera por el diario de que Tchang viajaba en el avión siniestrado, y que no han encontrado supervivientes. Pero Tintín cree que Tchang está vivo y parte hacia Katmandú con el objetivo de organizar una expedición de rescate. Tintín en el Tíbet coincide con una época de graves turbulencias en la vida de Hergé, y su creación constituyó una verdadera terapia para él que le ayudó verdaderamente a salir adelante. Según nos cuenta el propio Hergé en aquella época, (año 1958), atravesaba una verdadera una crisis y sus sueños y pesadillas eran casi siempre blancos. Estos sueños se repetían siempre y el autor se vio en la necesidad de acudir a un psiquiatra que le aconsejó que abandonara este trabajo porque nunca lo acabaría. Cosa que por suerte Hergé no hizo. No solo acabó Tintín en el Tibet, sino que, en la opinión de muchos, es una de sus obras maestras. El color blanco reina también en casi toda la obra, pero esta vez no como una pesadilla sino como una depuración.
