George Sand y Gustave Flaubert se vieron por primera vez el 30 de abril de 1857. Fue en el foyer del teatro del Odéon de París: un apretón de manos y, posiblemente, unas palabras corteses sellaron el encuentro. A ese encuentro siguieron, en septiembre del mismo año, unas páginas en el Courier de Paris que declaraban públicamente la admiración de Sand por Madame Bovary. Y muy poco más, en esos años: apenas un encuentro documentado, en 1859, en el cuarto piso del nº 2 de la rue Racine, vivienda parisina de Sand en ese tiempo. Hasta ese momento, cualquiera -y, para empezar, los dos protagonistas mismos- podría pensar que la relación entre ambos era de carácter literario, en cualquier caso social, cortés y nada personal o íntima. Tras leer las cartas que se intercambiarían en los trece años siguientes descubrimos que la realidad fue después casi la inversa: Sand y Flaubert casi nunca coincidieron en lo literario, pero sus sentimientos no dejaron de acercarlos.
